About us

Adventist history

A short, neutral overview of the movement our church family belongs to.

The Adventist movement grew out of earnest Bible study in the 1840s, when small groups of Christians in the United States searched the Scriptures for a deeper understanding of Jesus' return and the hope it offers.

Through careful study of the Bible, these believers came to rediscover the Sabbath, the seventh day of rest that God established at creation, and the call to live whole and healthy lives as an act of devotion.

The Seventh day Adventist Church was formally organised in 1863, bringing together congregations under a shared mission to share the hope of Jesus and the message of His soon return.

From those humble beginnings the church family has grown into a worldwide community of more than 20 million members. Adventists are known for their emphasis on Scripture, the Sabbath, healthful living and loving service to the communities around them, and for a worldwide network of schools, hospitals and relief agencies.

We are glad to be a small new part of that worldwide family, sharing the same hope and the same warm welcome here in Devizes.
